  6.     You probably missed it in the rush
  7. of news last week, but there was
  8. actually a report that someone in
  9. Pakistan had published in a newspaper
  10. an offer of a reward to anyone who
  11. killed an American, any American.
  12.  
  13.     So an Australian dentist wrote an
  14. editorial the following day to let
  15. everyone know what an American is . so
  16. they would know when they found one.
  17. (Good one, mate!!!!)
  18.  
  19.     "An American is English, or
  20. French, or Italian, Irish, German,
  21. Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An
  22. American may also be Canadian,
  23. Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese,
  24. Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian,
  25. Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani or
  26. Afghan.

  28.     An American may also be a
  29. Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot,
  30. Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the
  31. many other tribes known as Native
  32. Americans.
  33.  
  34.     An American is Christian, or he
  35. could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or
  36. Muslim. In fact, there are more
  37. Muslims in America than in
  38. Afghanistan. The only difference is
  39. that in America they are free to
  40. worship as each of them chooses.
  41.  
  42.     An American is also free to
  43. believe in no religion. For that he
  44. will answer only to God, not to the
  45. government, or to armed thugs claiming
  46. to speak for the government and for
  47. God.
  48.  
  49.     An American lives in the most
  50. prosperous land in the history of the
  51. world. The root of that prosperity can
  52. be found in the Declaration of
  53. Independence, which recognizes the God
  54. given right of each person to the
  55. pursuit of happiness.
  56.  
  57.     An American is generous. Americans
  58. have helped out just about every other
  59. nation in the world in their time of
  60. need, never asking a thing in return.
  61.  
  62.     When Afghanistan was over-run by
  63. the Soviet army 20 years ago,
  64. Americans came with arms and supplies
  65. to enable the people to win back their
  66. country!
  67.  
  68.     As of the morning of September 11,
  69. Americans had given more than any
  70. other nation to the poor in
  71. Afghanistan. Americans welcome the
  72. best of everything...the best
  73. products, the best books, the best
  74. music, the best food, the best
  75. services. But they also welcome the
  76. least.
  77.  
  78.     The national symbol of America,
  79. The Statue of Liberty, welcomes 'your
  80. tired and your poor, the wretched
  81. refuse of your teeming shores, the
  82. homeless, tempest tossed.' These in
  83. fact are the people who built America.
  84.  
  85.     Some of them were working in the
  86. Twin Towers the morning of September
  87. 11, 2001 earning a better life for
  88. their families. It's been told that
  89. the World Trade Center victims were
  90. from at least 30 different countries,
  91. cultures, and first languages,
  92. including those that aided and abetted
  93. the terrorists.

  95.     So you can try to kill an American
  96. if you must. Hitler did. So did
  97. General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao
  98. Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty
  99. tyrants in the world. But, in doing so
  100. you would just be killing yourself.
  101. Because Americans are not a particular
  102. people from a particular place. They
  103. are the embodiment of the human spirit
  104. of freedom. Everyone who holds to that
  105. spirit, everywhere, is an American.

  108. [DAVE'S THOUGHTS:] I am reading a book
  109. entitled [The Wisdom of Crowds], where
  110. the main point is that a large group
  111. of people will always come up with
  112. better answers than a small number of
  113. "experts."
  114.  
  115. That is the genius of freedom. The
  116. United States has made a lot of
  117. ethical and moral mistakes. But as
  118. long as we have freedom, we will find
  119. better answers to the problems of the
  120. world than those spouted by any small
  121. group or regime.

  123. At one time, America was called "The
  124. City (or Beacon) on the Hill," and
  125. while that title is a tad too
  126. religious and romantic, the fact
  127. remains that a certain "light" burns
  128. in this country -- a light that cannot
  129. be extinguished by the darkness. It is
  130. the light of commonality by diversity.

  132. I live in a little town in the exact
  133. middle of nowhere. But within 30
  134. miles, we have restaurants that serve
  135. Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Italian, and
  136. (of course) American foods -- which
  137. are heavily English, German, and a
  138. little French. We have been to
  139. countries such as Kenya and Romania --
  140. and while their food is good, they do
  141. not know (or expect) the variety we
  142. have here.
  143.  
  144. Which, at a "gut" level, says
  145. something about this land of freedom.
  146. For this is a place that -- ultimately
  147. -- makes the stranger our own.
